Company history

Windmill Feeds started at the site of the Windmill in Cross in Hand. There has always been some form of feed outlet selling products produced by the windmill on this site since 1855 when the windmill was built. The windmill has a little piece of history in that it was one of the last working commercially in Sussex from wind power until 1969.

Windmill Feeds developed in the 1980’s when the previous owners John and Cecily Howitt, bought the Foremans Emporium’s Cross in Hand branch.   They ran the Feedstore and the Saddlery until 2010 when John retired and it was bought by its current owners.

Windmill Feeds has continued to grow and add services that will benefit its customers. Something Different, a horse rug washing company was incorporated in January 2012 giving an efficient in house rug washing facility for our customers. The Uckfield branch, incorporating the rug washing facilities was opening in June of 2012 with Beacon Feeds joining Windmill Feeds in May 2013. This has now given the customers that visited our Cross in Hand branch from the outlying areas a choice of where they shopped as well as opening up our services to a wider range of prospective consumers.
